Object of Desire: Alitex Victorian Greenhouses

If you are lucky enough to have some surplus space in your garden or on your property, the idea of adding a greenhouse has likely crossed your mind. And if you are familiar with Alitex‘s collection of extremely charming Victorian-inspired greenhouses, the idea has probably crossed your mind multiple times.

Founded in 1952, U.K.-based Alitex is endorsed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. (It also has a U.S. branch.) I reached out to its brand director, Nelly Hall, who lives near the headquarters and personally owns a greenhouse from its Chambers line, to share more about the luxury glasshouses.

All Alitex greenhouses have aluminum framing, making them  durable and virtually maintenance-free. Its key feature? “Maximum glazing to allow the most amount of light through to the plants,” says Hall. “Light is enhanced by the ratio of frame to glazing, which is why we use narrow glazing bars to maximize the light and create a very elegant looking building.”

She explains that Alitex structures follow the exact proportions of traditional Victorian greenhouses, such as the width of the glazing bars, the 45-degree roof pitch, and the height of the eaves—which all result in the perfect Victorian look: “We have taken original internal details and replicated them to really enhance the inside space and functionality. We use traditional cast spandrels that are key supporting features in the roof and the eaves, our vent operating gear is a lovely lever system that allows you to manually set your side vents, and the benching is based on an old Victorian bench and looks traditional yet is strong.”

Unless you live on a vast estate, Alitex’s Royal Botanical, Kew collection of compact, accessible greenhouses, is a great place to start your daydreaming. Here’s a peek.
